Show the formula and score cutoffs

Composite (0–108) = (MCQ correct × 54 ÷ 42) + FRQ points

May 2027 format: 42 multiple-choice questions are scaled to 54 composite points (50%). FRQ: 6 questions × 9 points = 54 composite points (50%), no scaling needed.

Estimated reference cutoffs on the 108-point composite: 5 = 67+, 4 = 54+, 3 = 41+, 2 = 33+, 1 = below 33. These bands come from the College Board’s published 2012 practice-exam scoring chart; they are not official cutoffs for the May 2027 exam.

How the AP Calculus AB score calculator works

This calculator is designed for the May 2027 AP Calculus AB exam format. The multiple-choice section has 42 questions, and the free-response section has six questions worth up to 9 points each.

Enter the number of multiple-choice questions you answered correctly (0–42) and your score for each free-response question (0–9). The calculator scales the multiple-choice result to a maximum of 54 points, adds your free-response points, and compares the resulting composite score with the reference score bands shown below.

AP Calculus AB composite score formula

Estimated composite = (MCQ correct × 54 ÷ 42) + total FRQ points

  • Multiple-choice: The 42 questions are scaled to a maximum of 54 composite points.
  • Free-response: Six questions worth up to 9 points each provide a maximum of 54 points.
  • Maximum composite: 108 points. This calculation gives each exam section a maximum of 54 points, consistent with the published 50% weighting for each section.
  • The calculator rounds the composite to the nearest whole number before matching it to a reference score band.

Example calculation

Suppose you answer 21 multiple-choice questions correctly and earn 30 points across the six free-response questions.

  • Scaled multiple-choice score: 21 × 54 ÷ 42 = 27
  • Free-response total: 30 out of 54
  • Composite: 27 + 30 = 57 out of 108
  • Using the historical reference bands above, a composite of 57 falls in the reference range for an AP score of 4.

How to prepare for AP Calculus AB

  • Show your reasoning on free-response questions. Follow the question’s instructions and include the mathematical steps needed to support your answer.
  • Justify answers when asked. State the relevant theorem or test and verify its conditions where required.
  • Use appropriate precision and units. Follow the question’s rounding instructions and include units in context-based answers.
  • Practise both multiple-choice parts. Part A does not permit a calculator; Part B requires a graphing calculator for some questions.
  • Practise earning partial credit. Show valid setups and intermediate reasoning on free-response questions, even if you cannot complete every part.

Frequently asked questions

How does the AP Calculus AB score calculator work for the 2027 exam?

It scales your number of correct multiple-choice answers to a maximum of 54 points, adds your six free-response scores (up to 54 points total), and compares the composite with the historical reference bands on this page.

What composite score do I need for a 5?

The historical reference chart used here begins at 67 out of 108 for a 5. This is not an official May 2027 cutoff.

Is AP Calculus AB scored the same way as AP Calculus BC?

Beginning in May 2027, both exams have 42 multiple-choice questions and six free-response questions, with each section accounting for 50% of the exam score. Their score conversions are separate, so use an AP Calculus BC-specific calculator for that exam.

Do wrong multiple-choice answers lose points?

No. The multiple-choice score is based on correct answers, so there is no penalty for incorrect answers.

Is this an official College Board score?

No. This is an independent practice tool. It uses the published May 2027 exam structure and historical reference bands; the College Board determines your official AP score.
