Show the formula and score cutoffs

Composite (0–100) = MCQ correct + essay points × (55 ÷ 18)

MCQ: 45 questions, 1 point each = 45 composite points (45%). Essays: 3 essays × 6 points = 18 raw points, scaled to 55 composite points (55%), so each essay point is worth about 3.06.

Estimated cutoffs on the 100-point composite: 5 = 75+, 4 = 65+, 3 = 53+, 2 = 36+, 1 = below 36. College Board does not publish these cutoffs and adjusts them every year.

How the AP Lang score calculator works

This AP Lang score calculator estimates your AP English Language and Composition score from a practice exam. Enter your correct answers on the 45 multiple-choice questions and your 0–6 score on each of the three essays: synthesis, rhetorical analysis and argument. The calculator weights the sections, builds a composite out of 100 and shows your estimated score from 1 to 5.

Multiple-choice counts for 45% of your score and the three essays count for 55%, so your writing carries more weight than the multiple-choice section.

AP Lang composite score formula

Composite = MCQ correct + (essay points × 55 ÷ 18)

  • Multiple-choice: 45 questions, one point each = 45 composite points (45%).
  • Essays: three essays × 6 points = 18 raw points, scaled to 55 composite points (55%). Each essay point is worth about 3.06 composite points, roughly the same as three multiple-choice questions.
  • The composite is rounded to the nearest whole number before it is matched to a 1–5 score.

AP Lang exam format at a glance

Section Questions Time Weight
Section I: Multiple-choice 45 60 minutes 45%
Section II: Free-response 3 essays (synthesis, rhetorical analysis, argument) 2 hours 15 minutes, including a recommended 15-minute reading period 55%

Each essay is scored from 0 to 6 on the same rubric: 1 point for the thesis, up to 4 points for evidence and commentary, and 1 point for sophistication. There is no penalty for wrong multiple-choice answers.

AP Lang score conversion chart (estimated)

Example calculation

Say you answer 33 of 45 multiple-choice questions correctly and score 4 on the synthesis essay, 4 on rhetorical analysis and 3 on the argument essay.

  • MCQ: 33 out of 45 = 33.0
  • Essay weighted: 11 × 55 ÷ 18 = 33.6
  • Composite: 33.0 + 33.6 = 66.6, rounded to 67
  • Estimated AP Lang score: 4

How to raise your AP Lang score

  • Win the thesis point on every essay. Write a defensible thesis that answers the prompt, not a restatement of it. It is the cheapest point on the rubric.
  • Comment, don’t summarize. The four evidence-and-commentary points reward explaining how your evidence supports your line of reasoning. On rhetorical analysis, explain why the writer’s choices serve the purpose, not only what they are.
  • Use the sources on the synthesis essay. Cite at least three of the provided sources and use them to support your own argument instead of listing what each one says.
  • Chase the sophistication point last. It comes from nuance, such as acknowledging a tension or a limitation, and is worth the same as the thesis point, so secure the other five first.
  • Practice multiple-choice with the passage in hand. Go back to the text for every answer. Guess on anything you cannot resolve, since wrong answers cost nothing.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this AP Lang score calculator?

The composite formula uses the published 45% and 55% section weights, so the composite is reliable for the scores you enter. The jump from composite to a 1–5 score uses estimated cutoffs because College Board keeps them unpublished and changes them yearly. A composite near a cutoff could land on either side.

How much is each AP Lang essay worth?

Each essay is scored out of 6, and together the three essays account for 55% of the exam. Every essay point is worth about 3.06 composite points.

Is AP English Language scored the same as AP English Literature?

No. The exams differ in question counts (AP Literature has 55 multiple-choice questions, AP Lang has 45) and their cutoffs are set separately. This calculator is built only for AP English Language and Composition.

What is a good AP Lang score?

A 3 is considered qualified, a 4 very well qualified and a 5 extremely well qualified. Colleges set their own credit rules, so check the policy of the schools you are applying to.

Is this the official College Board score?

No. Official scores are released in July. This calculator is an independent study tool.
