Weighted Grade Calculator
Calculate your weighted grade by entering your scores and the percentage weight of each assignment, quiz, test, or exam. This weighted grade calculator helps you find your overall weighted average and understand how each assessment contributes to your course grade.
How to Use the Weighted Grade Calculator
-
Enter the grade you received for each assessment.
-
Enter the weight assigned to each assessment.
-
Add more rows if your course includes additional assignments or exams.
-
Calculate your weighted grade and review the result.
Use the grading weights provided by your teacher, professor, or course syllabus. If you have completed only part of the course, the result may represent your average across the assessments entered rather than your final course grade.
What Is a Weighted Grade?
A weighted grade is an average in which each score contributes according to its assigned weight. An assessment worth 40% of your course grade has more influence on your overall result than one worth 10%.
Weighted grading is commonly used for homework, quizzes, projects, midterm exams, and final exams. It differs from a simple average, which gives every score equal importance.
Weighted Grade Formula
To calculate a weighted grade, multiply each score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the sum of the weights.
Weighted Average = Σ (Grade × Weight) ÷ Σ Weights
When the weights are entered as percentages, you can use the following formula:
Weighted Average = Σ (Grade × Weight %) ÷ Total Weight %
For example, if your scores are percentages and your weights total 100%, the result is your overall weighted grade.
If you have entered only some assessments, dividing by their combined weight gives the weighted average of those assessments. Their contribution toward the entire course grade is a different calculation.
Weighted Grade Example
Suppose your course uses the following grading breakdown:
| Assessment | Score | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Quizzes | 90% | 20% |
| Midterm exam | 80% | 30% |
| Final exam | 85% | 50% |
| Total | 100% |
Calculate each assessment’s contribution:
-
Quizzes: 90 × 0.20 = 18
-
Midterm exam: 80 × 0.30 = 24
-
Final exam: 85 × 0.50 = 42.5
Add the contributions:
18 + 24 + 42.5 = 84.5%
Your weighted course grade is 84.5%.
Grading Scale
| Percentage | Letter Grade |
|---|---|
| 90%–100% | A |
| 80%–89.99% | B |
| 70%–79.99% | C |
| 60%–69.99% | D |
| Below 60% | F |
Note: This calculator uses a default grading scale. Actual grade boundaries may vary by school, college, or university. Check your institution’s grading policy for official results.
Weighted Grade vs. Simple Average
A simple average treats all scores equally. A weighted average accounts for the importance assigned to each score.
For example, suppose you receive 90% on an assignment worth 30% and 70% on an exam worth 70%.
The simple average is:
(90 + 70) ÷ 2 = 80%
The weighted average is:
(90 × 0.30) + (70 × 0.70) = 76%
The weighted average is lower because the 70% exam score carries more weight. When assessments have different weights, the weighted average is generally the more appropriate calculation.
How to Calculate the Grade You Need on Your Final Exam
To find the score needed on a final exam, you need your current course grade, the proportion of the course already completed, and your target overall grade.
Use this formula:
Required Final Exam Grade = (Target Grade − Current Grade × Completed Weight) ÷ Remaining Weight
All weights in this formula are expressed as decimals.
For example, if your current average is 80%, 60% of your course grade is completed, and your target is 85%, with the final exam accounting for the remaining 40%:
Required exam grade = (85 − 80 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = 92.5%
You would need 92.5% on the final exam to reach an overall grade of 85%, assuming the stated weights and current average are accurate.
If you want to calculate a target exam score directly, use a final grade calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a weighted grade manually?
Multiply each grade by its corresponding weight, add the products, and divide by the total weight. If the weights total 100%, use the percentage weights as decimals or divide the sum of the grade-weight products by 100.
Do weighted grades have to add up to 100%?
The weights for a complete course grading breakdown normally total 100%. However, you can calculate the weighted average of a subset of assessments by dividing by the total weight of the assessments included.
Can I calculate my grade before taking the final exam?
Yes. Enter the assessments you have completed to calculate their weighted average. To estimate your final course grade, you must also account for the remaining assessments and their weights.
What happens if one exam is worth more than another?
The exam with the higher weight has a greater effect on the overall grade. For example, a score on an exam worth 40% affects the result more than a score on an assignment worth 10%.
Can I use this calculator for college and university grades?
Yes. You can use it for college courses, university assessments, high school assignments, quizzes, projects, and exams, provided you enter the correct grading weights.
Is a weighted grade the same as a GPA?
No. A weighted grade is an average of scores based on their assigned weights. GPA is calculated using grade points and the institution's rules, which may account for credit hours and other grading policies. A weighted percentage cannot automatically be converted into a GPA without an appropriate grading scale.
Why is my weighted grade different from my school's grade?
Your school may use different assessment weights, grading scales, extra-credit rules, dropped assignments, curves, or rounding policies. Check your course syllabus and compare the values entered in the calculator with your instructor's grading rules.
Note: This calculator provides a mathematical estimate based on the grades and weights entered. Your institution's official grading policy determines your recorded course grade.
