Semester GPA Calculator

Calculate your semester GPA using our Semester GPA Calculator. Enter your course grades and credit hours to calculate your Grade Point Average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale. You can also use the CGPA calculation option to calculate your Cumulative Grade Point Average across multiple semesters.

This calculator uses the grade points listed below. Since grading systems vary between institutions, check whether this scale matches your university’s grading policy before relying on the result.

How to Calculate Semester GPA

Semester GPA is calculated by multiplying each course’s grade points by its credit hours, adding the results, and dividing the total by the number of credit hours included in the calculation.

Semester GPA Formula:

Semester GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Quality points are calculated by multiplying a course’s grade points by its credit hours.

For example, suppose you take these three courses:

Course Credit Hours Grade Grade Points Quality Points
Course 1 3 A 4.00 12.00
Course 2 4 B 3.00 12.00
Course 3 2 C 2.00 4.00
Total 9 28.00

In this example:

Semester GPA = 28 ÷ 9 = 3.11

Your semester GPA is therefore 3.11 on the 4.0 scale.

4.0 GPA Grading Scale

This calculator uses the following grade points:

Letter Grade Grade Points
A 4.00
A- 3.67
B+ 3.33
B 3.00
B- 2.67
C+ 2.33
C 2.00
C- 1.67
D+ 1.33
D 1.00
F 0.00

Note: This is the grading scale used by this calculator, not a universal grading standard. Universities may assign different grade points to the same letter grade. An F is assigned 0.00 grade points in this scale.

What Is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It represents your average grade performance across multiple semesters, based on the coursework and credit hours included in your institution’s calculation.

While semester GPA measures performance during one semester, CGPA reflects performance across multiple semesters.

CGPA Formula:

CGPA = Total Quality Points Across Included Semesters ÷ Total Included Credit Hours

For an accurate cumulative GPA, credit hours matter. Simply averaging semester GPAs can give an incorrect result when semesters have different numbers of credit hours.

Use the CGPA option in this calculator to calculate your cumulative GPA using the information requested by the tool.

Frequently asked questions

What is a semester GPA?

A semester GPA is the weighted average of the grade points earned in the courses included in a single semester. Courses with more credit hours generally have a greater effect on the result.

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA can refer to the grade point average for a particular semester or period, depending on the institution. Semester GPA specifically covers one semester, while CGPA generally represents cumulative performance across multiple semesters.

Is a 4.0 GPA grading scale the same at every university?

No. Universities may use different grade-point values, grading policies, and rules for calculating GPA. This calculator uses the grading scale displayed on this page, so compare it with your institution's official policy.

How does an F grade affect semester GPA?

On this calculator's scale, an F is worth 0.00 grade points. If the course is included in the GPA calculation, its credit hours generally remain part of the denominator, which can lower the semester GPA.

Can I calculate CGPA using semester GPAs?

Yes, but an accurate result also requires the relevant credit-hour information. When semester credit loads differ, a simple average of semester GPAs may not equal the correct CGPA.

Is semester GPA rounded?

The displayed result may be rounded to a certain number of decimal places. Rounding does not change the underlying calculation, and your university may apply its own rounding rules to official results.

Does this calculator provide an official university GPA?

No. It provides a calculation based on the grades, credit hours, and grading scale entered. Your university's official GPA may differ if it uses different grade points, credit-hour rules, repeat-course policies, or exclusions.
